18 Wallet-Friendly Spring Break Ideas
It’s officially time for spring break at UWM! Low on cash but still looking for a fun getaway? Here are some quick trips right in our own backyard!
1. Take a hike in Kettle Moraine State Park
With more than 160 miles of trails to explore, immerse yourself in nature at one of Wisconsin’s many state parks.
2. Make a splash at the Wisconsin Dells
There’s tons of deals at “The Waterpark Capital of the World” this time of year. Take a trip up to one of the many resorts, kick back and enjoy the (fake) sunshine.
3. Adventure around Devil’s Lake
Take in the view at one of the state’s most popular spots — free of charge. 😎
4. Get close with nature at the Urban Ecology Center
Just down the street from campus, the Urban Ecology Center is a great place to get educated about local sustainability, urban farming and more. It also doubles as an A+ study spot when school is in session! Be sure to check out the observation tower!
5. Take the scenic route on a Bublr Bike
It’s always convenient to hop on a bus and go, but when it’s nice out, take advantage of another student discount and ride! With several docking stations around Milwaukee, these bikes can get you to and from anywhere.
6. Instantly transport to the desert or tropics
Free on every Monday, the Mitchell Park Conservatory is a quick, simple and picture-perfect trip to take with a couple friends this spring break.
7. Explore new innovations at Discovery World
Pet a stingray, learn about the history of music, use a 3-D printer and more at Milwaukee’s only science and technology center.
8. Take it all in at the Public Museum
The art museum isn’t the only place with free days! There are so many areas to explore at the Milwaukee Public Museum, from anthropology to botany to the old streets of Milwaukee — it’s definitely worth a trip this vacation.
9. Check out a concert, play or other performances
Even when it’s off-season in the “City of Festivals,” there are still plenty of shows to see. Check out this calendar to see if your favorite artist is in town over break!
10. Catch some 💤s
This week is the perfect time to catch up on all those lost z’s during the semester. Plus, it’s completely free! 😉
11. Work ahead
Reality hits quick when break ends, so it’s always good to spend time working ahead to avoid feeling overwhelmed!
12. Become one with wildlife at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center
With 185 acres of forest, wetlands and trails, this priceless attraction gets you close with nature and it’s wildlife, only a couple minutes away from the big city.
13. Suspend yourself in nature at Lake Geneva Canopy Tours
Take a day trip to one of Wisconsin’s hottest tourist spots and hang with the trees. Swing on zip lines and climb an obstacle course, all for a small fee.
14. Get Loud for the Admirals
Hop on the bus to our very own Panther Arena and catch a hockey game. Tip: $9 tickets are usually available for students on Friday nights!
15. Venture to the Third Ward
It wouldn’t be a list of things to do if it didn’t include this hot spot. Indulge in a sweet treat or dish from around the world while shopping for some MKE gear at the Public Market.
16. Shop ’Til You Drop at the Milwaukee Makers Market
Catch the market every 3rd Sunday at various locations around the city. Vendors include local artists, crafters and small business owners. 👋💸
17. Explore MKE from great heights
This indoor walking tour is perfect for exploring Milwaukee on those brisk spring days. Take in the history about significant landmarks and get to know your city!
18. Find beautiful art in our community
Learn about the city and its culture through artwork by going on a different kind of scavenger hunt: a mural hunt! This website has already compiled all the best spots for you, now you just gotta go find them.
