Earth Day is all about celebrating our planet and all it provides us with. Oftentimes we spend the day picking up our environment, recycling or gardening. Yet there are so many other, smaller ways we can positively impact the Earth on a daily basis!

Leave your car at home

One of the many perks of living in Milwaukee is the multitute of transportation options! Even if you can’t walk to class, you can grab a Bublr bike or hop on the bus to get to campus.

Donate to food kitchens

Though we often think we need three bags of Doritos, ten frozen dinners and a whole case of Ramen Noodles, we likely aren’t going to be able to eat all of the yummy treats we purchase. Why not donate them to local food kitchens where the homeless and hungry can enjoy what we don’t need?

Use reusable items

Whether it’s water bottles, bags or straws, there are a lot of everyday items that can be made recyclable. Choosing reusable water bottles, canvas bags over plastic and metal staws is much better for the environment (and likely your wallet too!)

Garden

Growing your own fruits and veggies is a great new hobby and an excellent way to help our Earth. However, in the city it can be hard to find somewhere to plant a seed. Consider finding a local garden or joining UWM’s Conservation Club!

Beware of bleach

Many common household cleaners are actually indoor pollutants that can hurt both the environment and your personal health. Consider making your own non-toxic cleaners or researcing eco-friendly agents the next time you need to scrub those stove top stains.

Mind your trash

Start tracking what you put in the trash, and you may find that you’re throwing out half a loaf of stale bread each month! Once you notice your trashing habits, you can readjust how you purchase and plan for less waste.

Buy eco-friendly

Did you know the FDA doesn’t actually regulate the ingredients in most personal care products? Many ingredients in these products are detrimental to Mother Earth’s health. Make sure to check your makeup and skincare packages for safety information, and then choose brands who value the environment.

Treasure the trees

We all know that wasting paper is a dastardly deed, but we also need to remember to check labels when buying paper. Look for markings that symbolize the company has used sustainable methods of production!

Unplug

Making sure you unplug all of your electronics before you leave everyday is a great way to conserve energy. If your iPhone isn’t being charged, what’s the point of leaving the charger plugged in anyway?

Shorten those showers

We all deserve a luxurious, steamy shower every once in a while, but there’s no need to spend 20 minutes soaping up everyday. Time yourself. See if you can cut off some seconds or minutes everyday. Somewhere between five and 10 minutes is ideal, and it’s a great way to keep your skin healthy as well!

Eat locally

Dine out at restaurants that source locally grown food! Not only will you be helping the environment, but you’ll be helping local business owners as well.

Think about your diet

Though it’s not for everyone, consider trying a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle. Lowering your meat consumption not only lowers your risk for cancer and heart disease, it also means less contribution to green house gasses.

Bulk Up

Buying in bulk means using a lot less plastic packaging. One big bag of rice can use less plastic than up to five smaller bags. Save a buck and the Earth!

No matter how you decide to spend Earth Week, consider trying one of these 13 ideas to help the environment. We promise you won’t regret it!
